Faculty of Arts


The Faculty of Arts is one of the finest humanities faculties in the region and internationally. It was founded in 1912, when the University of Hong Kong opened, and has been a focus of academic life on campus ever since. The Faculty places a strong emphasis on language and culture in its curriculum, and currently offers 31 undergraduate, MPhil and PhD programmes, as well as 9 taught postgraduate qualifications. It provides a comprehensive, humanistic and liberal research environment that prides itself on world-class expertise in China-West studies, and enjoys an excellent success rate in its applications for competitive external research grants, with more than HK$55 million (US$7 million) awarded in 2011-2012. Its international outlook is reflected in the composition of its academic staff, with over 65% coming from outside the Greater China region. The Faculty also strives to extend its research and learning into the wider community through a range of innovative knowledge exchange activities.
