The University

Founded in 1911, The University of Hong Kong, as a leading international institution of higher learning in Asia, strives to attract and nurture outstanding scholars from around the world through excellence and innovation in teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange, contributing to the advancement of society and the development of leaders through a global presence, regional significance and engagement with the rest of China. The University has 10 faculties and over 140 academic departments and institutes/centres, with 28,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students who are recruited globally, and more than 2,000 members of academic and academic-related staff coming from multi-cultural backgrounds, many of whom are internationally renowned.

 The Position

As the leader, chief officer and external representative of the University, the President/Vice-Chancellor is responsible for leading the University in its pursuit of academic excellence that is recognized internationally and taking it to new heights. The President/Vice-Chancellor exercises broad responsibilities for all aspects of the academic, student, financial, institutional advancement, internationalization and administrative dimensions of the University; and is supported by a Provost/Deputy Vice-Chancellor, an Executive Vice-President (Administration and Finance) and five Vice-Presidents/Pro-Vice-Chancellors, each overseeing a specific academic/development portfolio.

 Candidate Profile

The successful candidate should have an outstanding international reputation for academic excellence with significant contributions to teaching and learning, research and service, and 

  • possess the necessary intellectual qualities inclusive of a strong aspiration and commitment to leading the University in its pursuit of academic excellence that is recognized globally and taking it to new heights
  • be a widely respected person of high ideals and principles, who would uphold the University's core values and safeguard its interests
  • be innovative and possess a solid knowledge of worldwide trends and developments in higher education, as well as a strong vision of the University's role, commitment and future development in the region and internationally
  • be able to lead a cross-cultural, large academic community with diversified interests and demonstrate ability to build team, resolve conflicts, manage crises, and possess a proven track record of resource development and fund-raising
  • be willing to consult and engage students, staff and other relevant stakeholders in promoting the vision and mission of the University, and be able to project the University's image and enhance its reputation.
