Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering specializing in the science and technology ofSmart Manufacturing and Robotics, to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

The Department offers B.Eng., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programmes.  The University has a highly ranked medical school and an active Mechanical Engineering Programme.  The Department employs about 30 full-time faculty and has well-equipped teaching and research facilities and support.  The Department has a vibrant research environment.  Frontier research efforts are promoted and conducted in strategic areas including, but not limited to, materials and nanotechnology, advanced manufacturing, control and robotics, thermofluids, biomedical engineering, and energy and environment.  Information about the Department can be obtained at

Smart manufacturing and advanced robotics, which rely on technologies derived from intelligent automation, networked sensors and real-time learning and computation, are rapidly transforming the global landscape of industry and human society.  The University and the Department have a proven track record in midstream translational research, and are committed to facilitate and fertilize interdisciplinary research efforts and crystallize impactful research outcomes.  Candidates with expertise in research fields such as cyber-physical systems; integrated intelligent sensors for monitoring, diagnosis, and control; mobile robots; autonomous vehicles (e.g. UAVs, USVs); human-robot interfaces; machine learning and optimization, will be considered.  Exceptionally qualified candidates from related disciplines could also apply.  Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in mechanical or a related engineering field with an excellent credential.  The appointee is expected to teach undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses offered by the Department.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
