Academic Posts in the Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education is ranked number 4 among the top Education faculties worldwide by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for Education 2018. Applications are invited for the following positions in the Faculty of Education, to commence on September 1, 2018, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal.

For professoriate positions, applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree, a professional teaching qualification in the relevant discipline, and substantial experience in teaching at the tertiary level.  Knowledge of the local context would be an advantage.  Appointees will be required to teach courses offered by the Faculty at various levels from undergraduate to doctorate, supervise research postgraduate students, contribute actively to research and knowledge exchange, undertake school practicum supervision and administrative responsibilities. Appointees may be considered for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. 

Applicants for “Professor” positions should possess strong academic credentials, outstanding academic leadership capabilities, extensive experience in conducting externally funded and rigorous field-based research, and a distinguished record of scholarship. Exceptionally outstanding candidates may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.

For the “Senior Lecturer” position, applicants should have a Master’s degree or above in the relevant area, a professional teaching qualification, not less than 7 years’ teaching experience and experience in local school management, and good knowledge of the local education scene. Those with a doctoral degree in the relevant field would be highly preferable. For “Lecturer” positions, applicants should have at least a higher degree in the relevant area, a professional teaching qualification, not less than 5 years’ teaching experience, and good knowledge of the local education scene.  Appointees will be required to take up substantial teaching responsibilities, undertake school practicum supervision and assume administrative responsibilities.

1. Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in English Language Education (1 post) (Ref.: 201800023)

Applicants should have strong teaching and research experience in any relevant specialism of applied linguistics, educational linguistics, educational discourse studies, and/or English language teacher education. The appointee will be expected to teach courses related to second language learning, language across the curriculum, genre-based pedagogies, new media and literacies, pedagogical grammar, and discourse analysis, among others.  Applicants should send a completed application form, an up-to-date C.V., a research plan and a teaching statement (max. 1-2 pages), to the Faculty at edufaca@hku.hk.

2. Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in the Division of Policy, Administration and Social Sciences Education (1 post) (Ref.: 201800024)

Applicants should have strong teaching and research experience in policy studies or education leadership and administration. Knowledge about Hong Kong education and society would be an advantage. The appointee will be expected to teach courses on education policy studies, social and philosophical foundations of education, as well as education leadership and administration. 3. Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor in Early Childhood Education (1 post) (Ref.: 201800068)

Applicants should have (i) a doctorate in early childhood education or a closely related field; (ii) tertiary teaching experience; (iii) practical knowledge/experience with young children and/or their families; and (iv) demonstrated ability to conduct research, publish, and attract external funding. Candidates with expertise in any of the following areas of early childhood education are sought: child development, curriculum, instruction, assessment, pedagogical practices, language and literacy, mathematics, and special education. Direct teaching experience in early childhood settings; knowledge of early childhood programmes, curriculum and models; experience with online learning formats at the university level; commitment to preservice teacher preparation; and knowledge of Chinese educational contexts are preferred. The appointee will be expected to teach early childhood development and education/pedagogy courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; supervise doctoral students; provide service to the various early childhood education programmes; and lead and participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary efforts with colleagues across the University. 4. Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in the Division of Policy, Administration and Social Sciences Education (1 post) (Ref.: 201800025)

Applicants should have a strong teaching background and experience in local school management, and policy and administration. They should also have a solid  background in educational administration and management, sociology of education, inquiry-based approaches, and/or in curriculum design for initial teacher education. The appointee will be expected to teach Master of Education (M.Ed.) courses (i.e. courses on educational administration and management); to teach our remodeled Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) using an inquiry-based approach; to conduct teaching practicum visits; as well as to take on leadership rolesin the wider professional community. 5. Lecturer in the Division of Learning, Development and Diversity (1 post) (Ref.: 201800026)

Applicants should have strong teaching experience in educational psychology, counselling and guidance, special education, or related areas. The appointee will be expected to teach courses on educational psychology, counseling and guidance, or special education, as well as courses in our remodeled Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) program using an inquiry-based approach; and to conduct teaching practicum visits. 6. Lecturer in the Division of Information and Technology Studies (1 post) (Ref.: 201800027)

Applicants should have strong teaching experience with a proven track record in any area under information and technology studies, particularly project management, information behaviour, organizational learning, social network analysis, management of information systems, and health information management. Ideally they should have an academic background in information science and information management, with teaching interests in exploring socio-technical dimensions of information in organizational and social contexts. The appointee will be expected to teach courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
