Senior Technical Officer/Technical Officer in the Department of Earth Sciences (3 posts) (Ref.: 201801000/201801001/201801002) (to commence as soon as possible, on a two-year fixed-term basis with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 10% of basic salary, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance) 

For Post (A) (Ref.: 201801000), applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years’ post-qualification experience.  They should have experience in either material testing and engineering-related laboratory or field-testing, and/or supervision on construction sites.  Possession of a valid driving license would be an advantage.  Applicants should also have a good command of spoken and written English, basic computer skills, a strong sense of responsibility, the ability to work independently and effectively under pressure, and be hard working.  The appointee will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of research and teaching equipment, conducting field research with research staff and students in Hong Kong and in Mainland China occasionally. 

For Post (B) (Ref.: 201801001), applicants should possess a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Physical Sciences with a strong background in core chemistry areas including analytical, physical and instrumental techniques for Earth Sciences applications.  A strong background in electronics and instrumentation trouble shooting is also recommended.  They should have experience in operating UHV systems such as in mass spectrometers and related equipment and a basic knowledge of laser optics.  They should also have an excellent command of written and spoken English; strong interpersonal, communication, problem-solving and supervisory skills; and be self-motivated.  The appointee will oversee the operation of a FT-MS and IRMPD laser system, and liaise with the PI to assist in maintaining and modifying this facility which comprises a 7 Tesla FT mass spectrometer that is coupled to a wave-tunable IR source.  He/She will also assist the PI in maintaining the various UHV stages of the FT-MS system, assist in maintaining the departmental stable isotope (GC-MS) and FT-IR facilities, assist the PI in the preparation of tender/purchase orders for the procurement of laboratory equipment/consumables, and provide technical advice for the future development of this research facility.  

For Post (C) (Ref.: 201801002), applicants must possess a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Chemistry/Engineer/Civil Engineer/Physics/Earth Sciences disciplines with at least 3-5 years’ solid hands-on laboratory experience in elemental and isotope geochemistry and  working experience in ICP-MS.  They should have an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese; strong interpersonal, communication, problem-solving and instrumentation trouble shooting skills; the ability to work independently and be self-motivated with a strong sense of responsibility.  The appointee will assist in facilitating innovative research across the earth sciences, with a strong focus on high precision isotope geochemistry (radiogenic, traditional and non-traditional stable isotope systems).  He/She will  manage, operate and maintain the facility for isotope and element analyses support of our geochemistry and isotopic facility, which is comprised of various state-of-the-art instrumentation – one Nu HR multi-collector ICP-MS, an ArF 193nm excimer laser system, and various wet chemistry clean-laboratory facilities.  Key responsibilities involve (1) the smooth running and maintenance of the facilities for isotope and element analyses support of our geochemistry and isotopic facility; (2) developing methods for mass spectrometry; (3) data reduction for radiogenic and stable isotope analysis; (4) preparation of tender/purchase order for procurement of laboratory equipment/consumables; (5) providing technical advice and training for the users; and (6) ensuring laboratory safety compliance with the university standards. 

Those with more experience and/or higher qualification may be offered the position of Senior Technical Officer.
