Research Assistant I/II (2 posts) in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 495634) (to commence as soon as possible for one year, with the possibility of renewal)
The collaborative effort of CUHK, HKU and HKUST is recruiting Research Assistants to work on designing and testing electronics for the ATLAS particle detector of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The LHC is the largest and highest energy particle accelerator in the world that aims at probing the fundamental structure of matter using high-energy particle collisions.
Applicants should have a B.Eng degree or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic/Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or Physics. They should have knowledge of PCB design (Cadence allegro/Altium /PADs), programming (C/C++/Python/Qt), FPGA programming (Verilog/VHDL). Experience in electronic equipment operation (power supply, oscilloscope etc.) would be an advantage. Applicants should also be willing to learn, and be able to demonstrate creative, analytical and good troubleshooting skills. The appointees will work with the physicists, electronic engineers and computer scientists. They will be responsible for the electronic hardware designs (such as printed circuit boards, electronic systems and devices), firmware design, designing testing procedures and conducting testings and measurements. They will visit among CUHK, HKU and HKUST campuses, and to laboratories in mainland China and foreign countries (such as CERN in Switzerland) yearly or bi-yearly.
