Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Astrophysics and Astronomy in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 537203), to commence as soon as possible on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.  Exceptionally outstanding candidates at Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms subject to approval.

The Department of Physics has a large and active group of researchers working in physics and astronomy. The Astronomy and Astrophysics group has diverse research interests, including stars and planets, compact objects, astronomical transients, active galactic nuclei, gravitational lensing, and multi-messenger astrophysics. The group forms a core of the Hong Kong Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (HKIAA), which aims to become an international centre of research excellence and a hub for astronomy in the Greater Bay Area and China. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Astrophysics, Astronomy, Physics, or a closely related discipline, with a strong commitment to research and teaching. Applicants conducting cutting-edge research in any area of observational or theoretical astrophysics, particularly those that complement and expand the current research directions of the HKIAA, are encouraged to apply. In addition to research excellence, successful candidates should demonstrate strong abilities in undergraduate teaching and graduate research mentoring. The successful candidates will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, secure research grants, supervise PhD students, serve on departmental or faculty committees, and actively contribute to the development and mission of the HKIAA as Full Members.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave, professional leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
