The Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong is seeking a full-time or part-time Research Assistant (RA I or II) who demonstrates strong interest and capacities in conducting qualitative research in digital anthropology, economic sociology, media and communications studies, or related disciplines.

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or above in anthropology, sociology, media/communications studies, cultural studies, literary studies, or related disciplines. The successful applicant will work closely with Prof Tom McDonald on researching the social phenomena emerging from Hong Kong’s initiative to become a global hub for the use of Web3 technologies, under the multi-year GRF grant “Value, policy and infrastructure: Hong Kong's Web3 visions and experimental futures”. Applicants should have excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure. Applicants should also possess excellent communication skills in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Those with less experience or lower qualifications may be considered for appointment as Research Assistant II.

The appointee will assist in the research process, such as conducting literature review, analysing and coding qualitative data, transcribing interviews, preparing manuscripts for publication, assisting with project logistics, and contributing to grant administration and dissemination of research findings. He/ she may also be involved in coordinating interviews, managing project timelines, supporting knowledge exchange activities, and participating in research team discussions. This is an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in qualitative research and interdisciplinary scholarship within a dynamic research environment.

Enquiries about the post should be sent to Prof Tom McDonald at mcdonald@hku.hk.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.

The University only accepts online applications for the above post. Applicants should apply online and upload an up-to-date C.V. Review of applications will commence from February 16, 2025 and continue until March 16, 2025, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
