Applications are invited for appointment as Data Manager (at the rank of IT Manager) at the Centre for Quantitative History (CQH) of the Faculty of Business and Economics (Ref.: 526210) (to commence as soon as possible on a two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance)

About the Centre for Quantitative History (CQH)

The Centre for Quantitative History (CQH) is a focal institution for coordinating and conducting big data-based historical inquiries, hosted at the HKU Business School in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences. The focus of the Centre is on the study of China’s economic, financial, social, and other history. It was founded as an Area of Excellence designated and funded by the Research Grants Council of the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong. The Role

Our team is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join us as a Full-Time Data Manager. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Centre’s Co-Principal Investigators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Database Construction and Management: Proficiency in one or more data systems, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc. Knowledge of cloud-based database services such as Amazon's RDS and Google Big Query is highly preferable. Provide support and maintenance to database construction and organization.
  • Data collection and management: Obtain, clean, and organize large and complex datasets for the purpose of empirical analysis. The ability to use web scraping, APIs, and other techniques for data retrieval is a plus.

Qualifications and Qualities

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, engineering, economics, finance, statistics, or a related field.
  • Experience with database management and webpage development, including proficiency in one or more database systems such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with design and implement security controls, data resilience, and data recovery measures.
  • Experience with webpage development and management, with the ability to execute assignments using web applications, scripts, and programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and APIs, would be a plus.
  • Fundamentals in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and big data systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of or interest in empirical research topics in economics and data visualization (e.g. webpage construction) would be a plus.

Individuals who hold a Bachelor's degree with at least three years of post-qualification experience, or a Master's degree with at least one year of post-qualification experience, may be appointed at the rank of Senior Research Assistant.
 
What We Offer

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment on two-year fixed terms will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme totaling up to 10% of the basic salary during the total contract period.
