IT Manager/ IT Officer for Research Computing Support in the Information Technology Services (Ref.: 530581)

ITS provides central IT services to support the University’s teaching, learning, research and administrative activities. ITS is transforming its organization to support its new strategic development and strategic adoption of new technologies. Information about ITS can be obtained at https://www.its.hku.hk/

 

The Role 

ITS is seeking a talented and highly motivated candidates to support the infrastructure for research computing, including:

  • Manage and maintain high-performance computing (HPC) systems, including computing servers, storage, software, and network infrastructure to ensure maximum performance and efficiency to address the needs of University’s research computing;
  • Install, configure, deploy, optimize and maintain HPC systems and resource management software (e.g. SLURM), storage, network and security aspects for supporting University HPC research computing services;
  • Take ownership of HPC/AI research computing systems to ensure smooth service delivery and operations, especially during service transition;
  • Monitor HPC system performance and troubleshooting any issues to ensure stable HPC services;
  • Collaborate and work closely with other teams of ITS, and research support staff and researchers from various research disciplines of HKU departments, to understand their computational needs; and
  • Provide technical support and training on HPC resources/software to help end-uses utilizing HPC/AI facilities effectively and efficiently.

 

Qualifications and Qualities 

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science/IT or related Computational Science-based disciplines with relevant post-qualification work experience at least 5 years for IT Manager post.  Those with lower qualifications and/or less experience may be considered for appointment as IT Officer (with at least 2 years of relevant work experience) or IT Technician.

He/she should have a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua), and good communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.  They should also have knowledge or experiences in at least two of the following areas:

  • at least one year hand-on experience in Linux OS administration, and preferably with application software build/configuration experience from source code;
  • research experience in STEM, medical sciences, social sciences and related disciplines;
  • experience in using, managing and supporting HPC or AI system (advantage);
  • knowledge of scientific programming languages such as C/C++, Fortran, Python, or R;
  • experience with parallel programming methods (e.g. MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC, CUDA) and container technologies (e.g. Docker, Singularity) are preferred;
  • at least one year of experience in administering large scale of physical servers, maintaining Infiniband network or high-throughput RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) networks, or managing enterprise-grade HPC or distributed storage systems;
  • Be highly self-motivated and team-oriented, able to manage multi-task independently and work under pressure.

 

What We Offer 

The appointment will be made on fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance.  A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 10% of basic salary.  Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits.
