Project Scope:

The ECF project ‘Connecting the dots: a standardized and quality-assured marine biodiversity database for Hong Kong’ will collate past and current datasets to create a quality-assured and globally standardized format which can be used for future assessment of Hong Kong’s marine biodiversity.

The collected information will contribute to Hong Kong's Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan, the development of the Hong Kong Biodiversity Information Hub website, and the sharing of datasets on global databases like OBIS and GBIF.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Applicant will collate, quality control, and code data on Hong Kong's marine biodiversity records. They will also help coordinate workshops to solicit and share data with the Hong Kong marine biology community. The Applicant will work primarily at the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS) as part of a small team, liaising with marine scientists and AFCD staff.

 

Job Requirements

  • Education:

The applicant should hold a degree or above in biology, Information or Computer Science.

Other majors are welcome if proficient in Microsoft Excel and research data management with an interest in biodiversity.

  • Language Skills:

Fluent in both English and Chinese (Cantonese/Mandarin) to collect and organize data from a variety of sources in both languages.

  • Data Collection and Management:

Be attentive to details and keep records of versions while managing and organizing datasets.

Check and update records according to both original documentations and the latest taxonomical standard on WoRMS.

Conduct workshops and discussions with other parties to facilitate data sharing and collaboration.

Have knowledge in R or Python and other tools for data management and visualization is preferred.

Knowledge in website user experience design and project management is a plus (optional).

The appointment will commence on 01 August 2024, or as soon as possible after that date on a 1-year temporary basis.
