Senior Curatorial Assistant (at the rank of Senior Facilities Assistant) in the University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) (Ref.: 528744)

The Role

The appointee will be working in UMAG’s Curatorial Department, and will assist in special exhibition projects and conduct collection related research. Individuals who pay attention to detail, have strong interpersonal skills and able to demonstrate ability to work independently with initiative are encouraged to apply. The appointee will focus on collection and exhibition related work as follow:

Collection work

The appointee will demonstrate an understanding of art history and a proactive attitude in research museum objects.

  • Curatorial research: Tasks involve reading and writing about museum objects.
  • Collection work: Enhance and verify data in the museum object database.
  • Collection maintenance: Assist with creating object condition reports.

Exhibition work

  • Exhibition research: Conduct research on art topics related to museum exhibitions.
  • Translation: Help translate exhibition-related texts.
  • Educational support: Assist in organising educational events, such as lectures and round-table discussions.
  • Lead guided tours.

Rotating weekend schedule applies and working irregular hours may be required occasionally. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview and a written test.

Qualifications and Qualities

  • A Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Art History, preferably in the field of Chinese art; AND a Level 4 result or above in both Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma or Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent;
  • At least 3 years of full-time relevant experience in museums, art organisations, research and curating art objects or academic institute with strong passion for the cultural sector;
  • Solid knowledge of Chinese arts and art history;
  • Good organisational and communication skills with excellent command of both written English and Chinese as well as experience in translating between the two languages. Proficiency in Putonghua is also required;
  • Proficiency in computer software, including Zoom, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

What We Offer 

The appointment will be made on fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 10% of basic salary, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits.
