Teaching Assistant/Tutor in the School of Humanities (Ref.: 537701) (to commence from January 2027 for 5 months on temporary basis)

Applicants should have a good first degree, and preferably with strong research, teaching, and/or professional experience, in one of the related disciplines, e.g., Anthropology, Archaeology, (Landscape) Architecture, Business Administration, Economics, (Urban and/or Planning) History, (Human) Geography, Heritage Studies, Law, Public Administration and Policy, Sociology, Urban Planning, and Urban Studies. Current PGs, PhD candidates, and postdocs are strongly encouraged to apply.

The appointee is expected to support research-based teaching for a Common Core course CCGL 9070 “The Making of the City and the Shaping of Societies” offered by Professor Yi Samuel Chen. This course is designed to achieve two major objectives: (1) to guide students in developing a systemic and integrative understanding of cities and city-making within historical, thematic, and comparative contexts and from global, regional, and local perspectives; and (2) to provide students with systematic training in research by guiding students to transition from mere knowledge acquisition and consumption to knowledge creation. The course champions enquiry-driven undergraduate teaching and learning by systematically guiding students in evidence-based research training and practice. The course has been successful in generating high-quality research results, e.g., with students winning the Best Student Work at the Common Core Student Learning Festival (2025–2026), and a series of student research papers being published or submitted for publication through peer-reviewed journals.

The appointee will assist the Course Coordinator in course preparation and administration (including updating the course syllabus and its TDG funded database); conduct tutorials and assessments; lead field trips; guide individual and group research projects; and perform any other duties as assigned. As the course is research-driven, Teaching Assistant/Tutor is also invited to join the Course Coordinator immediately after the completion of the course in guiding a selection of students to carry out further research for their final individual and group research projects during summer holidays towards publication as peer-reviewed journal articles.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.

The University only accepts online applications for the above post. Applicants should apply online and upload a cover letter stating the suitable expertise and experience, as well as an up-to-date CV. Review of applications will start on October 26, 2026 and continue until November 30, 2026, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
