Technical Officer in the Department of Civil Engineering (Three posts) (Ref.: 523890) (to commence on February 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a two-year fixed term basis with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefit scheme, totaling up to 10% of basic salary, with the possibility of renewal)

Technical Officer (Geotechnical Engineering and Concrete Technology) (2 posts)

Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree/higher diploma in Engineering or equivalent, with hands-on experience in the operation, installation and data acquisition of common instruments and equipment for geotechnical studies. Applicants with at least two years’ related working experience and knowledge in solid mechanics, geology, foundation engineering, or lathe and milling are preferred. They should be competent in general computer applications in using MS Office and MS Teams and possess a good command of spoken and written English and Chinese. Apart from being self-motivated in learning across disciplines, responsible and well-organized, they should also possess good problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as a team player in a multi-disciplinary environment. Preference will be given to those with experience in similar industries/organizations and qualified gantry crane/ forklift operator and first-aider.

The appointees will be expected to assist the academic staff primarily in the daily operation of the Geotechnical Engineering or Concrete Technology Laboratories for undergraduate courses and research projects, and possibly in laboratories of related disciplines, e.g. Material Testing Laboratory, Structural Dynamics Laboratory and Structural Engineering Laboratory. They may also be required to provide technical support to research post-graduate students, events and ad-hoc projects as assigned. On-job training for the operation of equipment will be provided. They may be required to work outside normal office hours on rare occasions. Shortlisted candidates of the position will be invited to attend an interview.

Technical Officer (Electronic or IT Support)

Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree/higher diploma in Electronic Engineering or related disciplines with hands-on experience in repair of equipment and troubleshooting computer problems, preferably with at least two years of related work experience.  They should have experience in computer and equipment management; server administration (Microsoft/Linux) and network administration; web page design with programming and development; and providing end-user support and training.  Sound knowledge of video recording system, video conferencing (e.g. Zoom and Microsoft Teams), multimedia production and apps development will be an advantage.  Apart from being self-motivated in learning across disciplines, responsible and well-organized, applicants should possess good problem-solving skills; the ability to work independently and as a team player in a multi-disciplinary environment; competency in general computer applications; and a good command of spoken and written English and Chinese. 

The appointee will be expected to provide technical support in maintenance of equipment and servers in the Department and research labs, and to assist the teaching staff primarily in the daily operation of the Computer Laboratory, including the Electronics Workshop for undergraduate courses and research projects.  They may also be required to provide technical support to events and ad hoc projects as assigned.  On-job training for the operation of equipment will be provided.  Shortlisted candidates of the position will be invited to attend an interview.
