Applications are invited for appointment as Associate Professor with Tenure or Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Film and Media Studies in the School of Humanities (Comparative Literature) (Ref.: 524327), to commence on August 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointment as Assistant Professor will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

The University and the Department

Founded in 1911, the University of Hong Kong is the oldest tertiary-education institution in Hong Kong and has a global reputation for excellence in teaching, research and innovation.  HKU has 10 academic faculties where English is the main language of instruction.  They include the Faculty of Architecture, Arts, Business and Economics (HKU Business School), Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine (Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine), Science and Social Sciences. As a global university, the HKU campus welcomes more than 5,000 international students from 90 countries and regions.

The Department of Comparative Literature teaches literature, film, visual and other media, and cultural/critical theories across national and linguistic divides.  It hosts a robust undergraduate major, along with programs at the levels of MA, M.Phil., and Ph.D.  Candidates are expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching.  The current teaching load is set at three to four courses per year.  In addition, willingness to participate in new pedagogical initiatives exploring links between film and technology, creative industries, and creative practice will be seen as a plus.  Information about the Department can be obtained at https://complit.hku.hk/.

The Position

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Film and Media Studies or related field by the date of appointment.  We seek a colleague with an expertise in the history and theory of film and media that complements the strengths of the Department’s existing faculty. Candidates with an area specialization in Asia are especially welcome.  Successful candidates should have an active record of publication while demonstrating the potential for continued distinction in their areas of research and teaching.  The Department values diversity in its faculty and encourages applications from members of underrepresented groups.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave, professional leave, medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and/or University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.   Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
