About the Centre for Quantitative History (CQH)
 
The Centre for Quantitative History (CQH) is a focal institution studying economic, financial, and social history in a quantitative fashion, hosted at the HKU Business School in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences. The Centre was founded as an Area of Excellence designated and funded by the Research Grants Council of the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong. The Role
 
The appointee will be responsible for directing the development of the data infrastructure that serves as the foundation for CQH’s research databases. Key responsibilities include but not limited to:
 
• overseeing core data management functions, including:  
o acquiring and transferring all research-related data; 
o producing data documentation, such as data dictionaries, operational procedures, instruction manuals, data capture guidelines and reports on dataset progress and updates;
• collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure data quality and timely delivery of data projects;
• ensuring compliance with data security, management requirements, and contractual agreements with partners;
• utilising relational and graph databases and tools;
• developing and track data project timelines;
• liaising with information technology specialists, consultants, contractors, and internal staff to support cohort data-related research activities; 
• providing training and support to team members on data management practices; and
• performing other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications and Qualities
 
• A bachelor’s degree in statistics, computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, informatics, or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in data management, programming, and statistics;
• Solid experience in managing relational databases and proficiency with database tools such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar systems would be added advantages;
• Prior experience handling large and complex datasets;
• Strong attention to detail and a sense of responsibility;
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team;
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex problems into clear, non-technical terms;
• Familiarity with new database and information system technologies;
• Familiarity with or interest in Chinese history and historical data is a plus for candidates; and
• Applicants with less experience may be considered for the position of IT Officer.
 
What We Offer

The appointment will be in the form of a fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible and with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 10% of the basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits.
