The Faculty of Education
HKU has been involved in teacher education since 1917, and the Faculty of Education was established in 1984. The Faculty of Education is forward-looking and world leading, ranking third globally in Education (THE 2020). It has assumed an important role in educational research and professional training and has contributed significantly to education policy and development in Hong Kong. It is a major teacher-education institution and has strong expertise in policy analysis and curriculum development. Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in English Language Education in the Faculty of Education (Ref.: 499648), to commence on September 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. An exceptionally outstanding candidate at the Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.
Applicants should possess (i) a Ph.D. degree in English Language Education or a closely related field; (ii) a professional teaching qualification; (iii) teaching and research experience in any relevant specialism of applied linguistics, educational linguistics and/or English language teacher education; and (iv) a proven track record in, or strong potential for, research, scholarly publications and competitive external funding. Knowledge of the local context would be an advantage.
The appointee will be expected to teach courses offered in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, related to second language acquisition, language across the curriculum, genre-based pedagogies, new media and literacies, pedagogical grammar, and/or discourse analysis, among others. He/She will also supervise research postgraduate students, contribute actively to research and knowledge exchange, undertake school practicum supervision, and assume service/administrative responsibilities as appropriate.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
